The financial pressure to finish education in time
We all know that a college education has a worth that cannot be expressed in money. The time of your life spent as a student does not only leave you with invaluable knowledge that can help you find a well-paid job and career, but also makes you independent and teaches you some important life lessons during your time as a student.
The 2007 federal budget proposal that has just been made public states that funding should be taken away from so-called Pell student grants. These grants enable people to make use of work/study programs and learning assistance schemes. Students and their families have been trying their best to gather as many signatures as possible from people all over Jefferson County to protest against this proposal. Their main aim is to have the interest rates of student loans cut so that people will be able to study no matter what (financial) background they come from. The recent increase in tuition fees for students has already left its damage. Many students struggle to manage a job or even multiple jobs and study at the same time. There is also the pressure of finishing your education within four years or college costs will increase even more. There are many benefits to people receiving a college education. It is a fact that college graduates earn over 70% more in wages than the average high school student. However the cost of a college education is getting more and more unbearable and impossible to pay for many people. Unfortunately President Bush has submitted a proposal to cut the federal budget for 2007 due to which thousands of students situated in Colorado would end up without any form of support or assistance. This in fact would mean that nearly 16,000 students are denied the chance to go to college simply because they would not be receiving the much need financial help to be a student. |
