The Government and Student Debt

It is hard to get a really clear picture of the plans of our government when it comes to education and the costs that go with it. Students build up a huge debt during their college years and it appears that less is done to accom odate students and stimulate them every year.

The thought that college students will easily find a well paying job after finishing their education is not a realistic one and they have as hard a time as anyone else to find a job. Most students start out on the job market by looking for a job that connects to their education only to realise (after a year or so) that they might as well take any job that they can get to pay off their huge student debts.

The average student debt lies around $30,000. This in effect means that a student is paying off around $300 a month which is, for most people (over) half of their monthly income. Paying your monthly bills for housing, electricity and food can become nearly impossible and many people end up in poverty as a result of trying to get educated to find a decent job to start a good life. Many students feel as if they are being punished for trying to do the right thing, for getting an education.

Students are currently protesting the possible re-election of Mike Rogers as he is one of a group of politicians who actually want students to pay back even more on their student loan debts. He voted against an amendment by the Democats who would like to see the interest rates for federal student loan schemes reduced with 50%. The sooner students are actually able to get rid of their debts, the sooner they can actually focus on finding a better job so they can start paying more tax money and improve their quality of life.
